New video Posts on Instagram will be shared as Reels

Instagram Reels offer a more immersive and entertaining way to watch and create video, so we’re now bringing a full-screen experience to your video posts to create one simplified experience.

In the coming days, new video posts under fifteen minutes will be shared as reels.

Starting in the next few days, all video posts will also have access to Reels creative editing tools, to help make your videos more fun and engaging. However, using in-app editing tools is optional - you can still post videos without editing them in the app, while also benefiting from the same full-screen, immersive experience as Reels. (Update on 27 July 27 2022 at 10:30 PT: Replaced a static image of these updates to Reels with the video below.)

Here's what else you need to know about the changes to video on Instagram:

  • Discovery: If you create a reel and have a public account, it will also be eligible to be recommended and seen by more people on Instagram. This currently applies to reels that are under ninety seconds long. If your account is private, your videos will still only be shown to your followers.
  • Profile: We will also consolidate the video and Reels tabs on your profile, so there is one home for all your videos.
  • Past Posts: Previous videos posted prior to this change will remain as videos and won’t become Reels.

We’re always working on ways to improve your Instagram experience. We'll continue to build features to make it easier and more fun to create reels on Instagram - and see here for an exciting new update to Templates in Reels.
